William F. "Bill" Fox Jr. is probably best known for making high school basketball Indiana's leading sport. He began his journalism career in 1920 on the news side at the Indianapolis News, but was soon transferred to the sports department. Fox's many columns, such as "Shootin' 'Em," "Tearing Firma," "A Corner in Pigskin" and "The Yarnin' Basket" were his trademarks. He worked at The News for 19 years before becoming sports editor in 1939.

Among Fox's honors were the 1959 Grantland Rice Memorial Award given by the Sportsmanship Brotherhood in New York, the 1964 Newsman of the Year award presented by the Indianapolis Press Club and the 1962 Joe Boland Award for service to youth given by the ISSA. Fox also did a daily radio show for WIBC and founded and managed The News Downtown Quarterbacks Club. He is also a member of the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame.
