Dale Burgess wrote for the Associated Press in Indiana for 35 1/2 years. He covered high school and national sports, the Indianapolis 500, news and the state legislature before retiring in 1975. Five months after retiring from the AP, Burgess took a two-year job as coordinator of public information for the Democratic Party in the Indiana House of Representatives.

Burgess began his journalism career in 1929 at the New Castle Times. He then moved to the Muncie Evening Press in 1931 and stayed there eight years before taking the job at the AP. Twenty of Burgess' years at the AP were spent as the Indiana Sports Editor. Burgess is also a member of the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame.
