Ben Tenny retired from the Fort Wayne News-Sentiel in 1972 after four years as a writer and 43 as sports editor. His legacy in Northeast Indiana is in the area of high school sports coverage.
"No one in the history of sports coverage in this community and this area had the dedication to covering high school sports that Ben Tenny did," said retired News-Sentinel editor Ernest Williams when Tenny died in 1987.
Tenny was a 1925 graduate of Fort Wayne Central High School and was named an outstanding alumnus of the school in 1970.
He has the distinction of being the first president of the ISSA in 1946. Two of his staffers at the News-Sentinel, Bud Gallmeier and Jim Costin, preceded him in the ISSA Hall of Fame. His longtime friend and rival, Carl Wiegman, was inducted on the same evening.
