Carl Wiegman

Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette

Inducted 2004

Although Carl Wiegman was the sports editor of the Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette for only 15 years before his death in 1977 -- only months before he planned to retire -- his tenure at the newspaper spanned 34 years.

He joined the staff under longtime sports editor Bob Reed and covered the full spectrum of Fort Wayne and Indiana sports. His favorites were high school baseball and track and field, but he covered the full range of prep sports and was a frequent occupant of college football and World Series press boxes ans the press box at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Upon Reed's retirement in 1962, Wiegman also began covering the Fort Wayne Komets hockey team.

Wiegman was a past president of the ISSA and the Sportswriter of the Year in 1972. He was a member of the Fort Wayne Oldtimers Baseball Hall of Fame and was also honored for his contributions to Fort Wayne softball and Northeast Indiana boxing.

Wiegman and longtime rival and friend Ben Tenny were both inducted into the ISSA Hall of Fame on the same night in 2004.
