Known as the dean of Hoosier sportscasters, Luke Walton broadcast high school, college and professional sports, including basketball, baseball, football, hockey, swimming and auto racing, from 1941 through 1988.
Luke broke into broadcating at WBOW in Terre Haute in 1931, but left there to enter college at Butler University. After graduating from Butler, Walton joined the staff at WIRE in Indianapolis. He worked there four years before moving to WISH radio and TV.
Among his more memorable tenures in broadcasting was his play-by-play of Indianapolis Indians baseball from 1948-56. He left WIRE in 1956 to form his own advertising agency.
In 1952, Walton and Wilbur Shaw founded the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Radio Network. Luke participated in the Indianapolis 500 broadcast until 1988. He was inducted into the Broadcast Pioneers Hall of Fame in 1983.
