Stan is well-traveled in the Midwest, having worked at a half-dozen newspapers in Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky. He was a member of the Louisville Courier-Journal's sports staff for 25 years, reporting on college sports, golf, horse racing and motorsports. He was interim sports director for six months in 1979. As lead golf writer, Sutton helped the Courier-Journal receive a Best of Gannett Award for its coverage of the 1996 PGA Championship in Louisville. Sutton then became sports editor of the Bloomington Herald-Times in 2000.
Sutton's career began at the Shelbyville News and also included stints at the Columbus Republic, the Findlay (Ohio) Courier and the Bloomington Courier-Tribune. During his tenure as managing editor at the Courier-Tribune, the newspaper was named Indiana's Blue Ribbon Daily in 1973.
Stan is the co-author of the book "John Laskowksi's Tales From the Hoosier Locker Room," and also teamed with Landon Turner on a book about IU's 1981 NCAA championship.
