Howard Kellman

Indianapolis Indians, WHMB-Noblesville

Inducted 2009

For more than three decades, one voice has been synonymous with Indianapolis Indians baseball on the air — Howard Kellman’s. He is beginning his 34th season as the voice of Indianapolis’ Triple-A baseball team, but that is just part of a decorated career. Howard has been the voice of eight Indians teams that won league championships, the second-most of any announcer in baseball history. He also has been the voice of high school football and basketball in Central Indiana for nearly two decades, calling the games of the week broadcasts on WHMB-TV since 1990.

A native of New York and a graduate of Brooklyn College, Howard worked as a writer and producer for WINS radio, the nation’s first all-news station. He then came to Indianapolis and became the Voice of the Indians in 1974. He has also broadcast games for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Chicago White Sox and St. John’s University. Howard also calls the Triple-A championship game, the Bricktown Showdown, for ESPN2. He has covered the World Series, Indiana Pacers, Indianapolis Colts and statewide college sports for CBS, ABC and AP Radio.

In 2002, Howard was awarded the Marv Bates Indiana Sportscaster of the Year by the ISSA. He was also given the Estel Freeman Distinguished Service Award by the Indians in 2005. Howard and wife Robin live in Carmel.
