Walt Ferber’s voice has been bringing Dubois County sports to the WITZ airwaves for three decades, as the play-by-play voice of Jasper High School sports.
A graduate of New Albany High School and Indiana University, Ferber has been in radio since 1972. Two years later, he became the state’s youngest radio sports director when he joined WREY radio in New Albany upon graduating from high school. Ferber worked for WTTS and WGTC in Bloomington from 1974-79, working alongside Hall of Famer Joe Smith. He also broadcast sports events from throughout Indiana on cable TV in 1978. In 1979, he joined WWWY in Columbus, calling the Columbus East Olympians’ football state title that year.
Ferber joined WITZ in 1980, and he currently serves as the station’s program director, sports director, an on-air personality and an account executive. He hosts three daily sportscasts six days a week, has been the voice of Jasper High School football, basketball and baseball. In addition, he has hosted the Southridge Forecasters for 18 years and has been the voice of the Dubois County Dragons and Bombers baseball teams.
He was honored as the ISSA’s Marv Bates Sportscaster of the Year in 1996. He has also been honored by the Indiana Interscholastic Administrators Association, the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association, the Associated Press and Network Indiana.
Ferber has been married to the former Melanie Padgett for 29 years. They have two sons, Nathan and Jonathan, and two grandchildren.
